Does Your Financial Mindset Serve You?

Windows on Finance Part 5

Today I want to explore our beliefs around money. As I said in an earlier article, there is no Money 101 course where we get our beliefs around money from, rather it seems to come as a form of osmosis from our personal life experiences (often as children observing the financial experience of our parents) and our perceptions of our parents and friends attitudes and beliefs around money. Maybe it’s what we believe is “common knowledge” or “everyone knows is true.” Maybe our beliefs make sense in terms of our life experience.

What have I to do with filthy Riches?

Windows on Finance Part 6

Welcome back. If you’ve just joined us, please read article 5 before you embark into this one, otherwise you might think I’m a subscriber to the “health, wealth and prosperity” club.

Last time we looked at the poverty and provision mindsets and found them both to be at odds with scripture - unless we’re seeking to be cursed or selfish! This left us with only one other possibility... prosperity! We also found Paul supporting this with a bit of a tirade on “abundance” in 2 Cor 9:8.

So to help us get a clearer handle on “prosperity” and “abundance” from a biblical perspective, a great place to start is in Genesis where God not only promises Abraham great wealth, He also puts it into context.

Enlightened Self Interest

Windows on Finance Part 11

Did you know God has channels of blessing? They are like pipelines from heaven to earth through which He sends his abundance. An example of this is in Genesis 12:1-3 where God says to Abraham, “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Here God is promising that all the families of the earth shall be blessed through Abraham and his offspring. Christians usually think of this in terms of God’s Son Jesus, born of the line of Abraham who made a way for mankind to be reconciled back to God, and this is the greatest spiritual blessing outworking from the Abrahamic covenant. But have you ever thought there could be other ways God uses Abraham’s descendants to bless all the families of the earth?

Overcoming Mammon

Windows on Finance Part 9

How we relate to money is an indication of our understanding of God’s grace. God’s basic principles around money call for giving and receiving. These embody Grace, e.g. when you give something without expectation of return you are manifesting grace (unmerited favour). The world’s financial system of buying and selling demands exchange (value for value). So when we take something designed by man for buying and selling (i.e. money) and freely give it with no expectation of return, we have introduced money to grace and we have profaned the sacred properties ascribed to money by mammon and have declared to the spiritual and natural realm that mammon is not our source.
