Precessional Movement – say what?

Ripples Ripples

Windows on Finance Part 7

Have you ever noticed that in our thinking we get caught up in linear cause and effect and we set our expectations around that? We have been taught duality thinking e.g. hot/cold, black/white, up/down, left/right cause/effect etc and this framework leads us to the conclusion for example that if we push something, it will move in the direction of our push, and in some cases this holds true e.g. when playing billiards. And yet when we drop a stone into a pond the ripples go outwards at 90 degrees to the angle the stone was dropped. The ripple (the effect) defies all that linear cause and effect thinking by moving at right angles to the push of the stone. This effect is known as Precessional Movement and is well documented in scientific circles (usually with complex formulae).

In fact Precession is a generalised scientific principle i.e. it applies universally and yet we don’t often factor it into our thinking. How would we act if we believed the outcome we were trying to create actually shifted at 90 degrees to where we were pushing? This may help explain a lot of the frustration we experience in life around outcomes that are not showing up no matter how hard we seem to push to get them.

“Interesting” I hear you say, “but what has this got to do with Blessed to be a blessing?” Try everything! You see people hear the ‘Blessed to be a blessing’ message and then they race off and start chasing after the blessings. They can get caught up in the whole “Health, wealth and prosperity” thing or whatever they are chasing and when it doesn’t arrive linearly they say “This doesn’t work” and they return to their poverty or provision mindsets. Now they are partly correct in that the way they are applying the teaching does not work.

What is missing is that they are trying to go linearly from A to B. However under Precessional principles, the way to get to B is to head for C where C is 90 degrees from what we want and then B will show up all by itself!

Of course the burning question is: Where is C? C is right under your nose. You are C! Work on you and the results will show up. Jesus knew all about Precession. It’s a principle which works in the spiritual as well as the physical. In Matt 6:31-33 He said:

“Therefore do not worry saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ for after all these things the Gentiles seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Seek first the kingdom of God (= work on yourself to become more Christlike) and all these things shall be added - note it’s not “might” be added! Getting the blessing is not a grabbing thing. We don’t seek the money, we seek first His kingdom and all these things are added unto us.

As we seek to bless others, we get blessed. For example, whether it is McDonalds providing food and entertainment for families and giving parents time out or the mechanic who fixes our car, the more these business people concentrate on honourably blessing and serving humanity, the more they get blessed. This is the invisible secret of capitalism – enlightened self interest, servant hood in action. Jesus is the ultimate example of this, the One who served others by paying the ultimate price and now look how exalted He is.

So let’s not go after the money (mammon), let’s follow God and His purposes and the blessings will flow. It is the linear thinking based chasing after money which brings the snare, the heartache and the misery. It is mammon leading us on after shadows and the deceitfulness of riches. If we want to be blessed to be a blessing, let’s work on changing us and the reward will come. Ask yourself “How would the person I want to be do the thing I am about to do?”

Changing this way of thinking has all sorts of ramifications, e.g. it’s not “What do you want to be when you grow up”, it’s “What is your calling?” It’s realising that we don’t work for our boss, we work for ourselves, because if we don’t deliver the boss can sack us and get someone else. We’re the only one who can’t sack ourselves! We’re stuck with us forever, so if you desire better outcomes, deal with the only person who can change your destiny – you!
