Did you know God has channels of blessing? They are like pipelines from heaven to earth through which He sends his abundance. An example of this is in Genesis 12:1-3 where God says to Abraham, “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Here God is promising that all the families of the earth shall be blessed through Abraham and his offspring. Christians usually think of this in terms of God’s Son Jesus, born of the line of Abraham who made a way for mankind to be reconciled back to God, and this is the greatest spiritual blessing outworking from the Abrahamic covenant. But have you ever thought there could be other ways God uses Abraham’s descendants to bless all the families of the earth?

Did you know modern Israel has more PhDs per capita than any other nation on earth? It is wildly over represented on the list of Nobel Prize laureates and is responsible for such world changing technology as the Intel microchip, cell phones, voice mail, the list goes on and on. God is continuing to honour his Abrahamic covenant and uses Abraham’s descendants to bless all the families of the earth both spiritually and materially.

So what has all this got to do with me you ask? The clue is in Gen 12:1-3. God says He will bless those who bless Abraham and his descendants and He will curse those who curse them. The question is; if you want to be blessed, are you blessing the Jewish people? God’s promise on this is so rock solid He repeats it two more times to both Isaac and Jacob. This is one of God’s promises He has written in the Bible in triplicate!

Then in Romans 15:26-27 Paul says: For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem (ie the Jews). It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things.

So Paul now ups the ante and says that as Gentiles we are in debt to Israel and it is our duty to minister to them in material things.

In Eph 2:11-13 Paul says: Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been made near by the blood of Christ.

The points I will take out of this are that firstly, there is a commonwealth of Israel – and it’s not just a spiritual commonwealth. And secondly, as Christians we are no longer aliens from this commonwealth but are partakers in the covenants of promise. How cool is that?

So not only is it our duty to minister to the Jews in material things, we also get to share in the commonwealth of Israel. I like to call this enlightened self-interest!

Ask God how you can bless the Jews, what does He want you to do? The options are almost endless. The key is to be motivated by love. Here are some ideas to help get you started:

  • Pray for Israel and the peace of Jerusalem on a regular basis.
  • Proclaim God’s promises over Israel.
  • Join Operation Friendship &/or welcome Israeli students into New Zealand.
  • Could you host Israeli travellers?
  • Help the local Israeli community have a booth at your next international festival.
  • Give to a missions organisation working amongst Jews.
  • Will you go as a missionary yourself?
  • Contact the local Israeli community, befriend them and ask how you can bless or serve them (use the embassy or local synagogue to connect with them).
  • Look at investing in Israeli companies and businesses.
  • Ask your investment adviser what Israeli companies you are invested in.
  • Are there are opportunities to trade, exporting to Israel or importing their products?

What is amazing is that so many in the world are opposed to the Jews. By doing this they are putting themselves under a curse and are cutting off God’s intended channel of blessing to them. Remember our enemy does not want us to be aware of God’s principles of blessing for our lives, so be prepared for spiritual opposition as you work your way through this. Make sure you regularly cover yourself and your loved ones in prayer.

I feel it would be remiss of me not to remind you that these are not magic formulas whereby if you do X, God must do Y. I am laying out before you generalised spiritual principles which you must apply prayerfully and be led by His Spirit in what He is calling you to do. Let me leave you with Ephesians 2:10:

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

May God richly bless you,
