Enlightened Self Interest

Windows on Finance Part 11

Did you know God has channels of blessing? They are like pipelines from heaven to earth through which He sends his abundance. An example of this is in Genesis 12:1-3 where God says to Abraham, “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Here God is promising that all the families of the earth shall be blessed through Abraham and his offspring. Christians usually think of this in terms of God’s Son Jesus, born of the line of Abraham who made a way for mankind to be reconciled back to God, and this is the greatest spiritual blessing outworking from the Abrahamic covenant. But have you ever thought there could be other ways God uses Abraham’s descendants to bless all the families of the earth?

It’s a Relationship not a Contract

Windows on Finance Part 10

Our walk with our Creator is a journey in relationship with Him. He is our loving heavenly Father and we are his children. However He is still God and we don’t have any financial leverage on Him any more than an ant has leverage over the sun. Today I want to keep it real and make it clear there’s no magic formula or Holy Grail to health, wealth and prosperity. The aim of this whole series is to impart eternal biblical principles regarding our finances and being blessed but we need to understand we can’t use the Bible like a legal contract with God whereby if we do “Financial A”, He must do “Financial B”.

Overcoming Mammon

Windows on Finance Part 9

How we relate to money is an indication of our understanding of God’s grace. God’s basic principles around money call for giving and receiving. These embody Grace, e.g. when you give something without expectation of return you are manifesting grace (unmerited favour). The world’s financial system of buying and selling demands exchange (value for value). So when we take something designed by man for buying and selling (i.e. money) and freely give it with no expectation of return, we have introduced money to grace and we have profaned the sacred properties ascribed to money by mammon and have declared to the spiritual and natural realm that mammon is not our source.
