So You Want to Marry My Daughter?
This is for all those parents who’ve got someone dating their daughter and talk is turning towards marriage. That means her current boyfriend could soon be the one raising your grandchildren!
It is important for parents to be able to accept and bless a marriage relationship and sometimes to be the voice of reason about whether they should get married at all, especially when the happy couple are so in love they’re not necessarily thinking things through. Part of this is determining the long term compatibility of the prospective partners including assessing their life values and behaviours. Assuming you know your daughter reasonably well it is probably the prospective suitor you’re wanting to get to know.
Today I want to investigate one of the cornerstone teachings of Protestantism, namely that Christ died to do away with the law (Torah or Old Testament laws). This is taught by mainstream Protestant theologians, pastors and teachers and has wide ranging implications for all of us.
There are only three possible options regarding the law (Torah):
1. The law is completely done away with and now none of it applies;
2. Some of the law still applies e.g. Thou shalt not kill;
3. All of the law still applies.
One of these statements has to be correct and by the rules of logic the other two must be wrong.
Most believers would consider their answer to the question “Are you under the Law?” was pretty easy. It would be “No.” They would reach for Romans 6:14 and rightly proclaim that as followers of Messiah, Paul has clearly stated they are not “under the law.”
Rom 6:14 states:
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace. (KJV)
The vitally important question leading from this is: What does “under the law” actually mean?
Today we’re looking at how the prince of Greece’s influence has affected the way we interpret scripture. Whilst the New Testament manuscripts we have are written in Greek Aramaic, there is reference from one of the early church fathers stating that Matthew was originally written in Hebrew. Irrespective of which language the New Testament was originally written in, for the most part its authors were Jews steeped in the Hebraic mindset and lifestyle. So even though they were writing in Greek Aramaic they used Hebrew (biblical) phrases and concepts.
There’s a bit of history in this post, but if you can make it through to the end you should be able to join the dots.
Antiochus IV Epiphanes (God Manifest) was a Greek king of the Seleucid Empire from 175 BC until his death in 164 BC. His original name was Mithradates (gift of Mithra – the Persian sun god) and he assumed the name Antiochus after he ascended the throne. In 167 BC he invaded Jerusalem where he profaned the temple and dedicated it to Olympian Zeus.
Warning: This article may be upsetting for some people...
As a believer, would you be comfortable participating in a satanic worship ritual? I would hope you would say “Certainly not,” because God forbids us from doing this.
“You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them…”
What is interesting is that the Israelites not only had to leave behind the false gods they worshiped in Egypt, they also had to deal with the false gods they were going to encounter in the Promised Land. God had clear instructions about how to treat the worship of pagan gods in the land Israel was about to enter...
Prince of Greece Part 1
In Daniel 10:20 it reads; Then he (the angel) said (to Daniel), “Do you know why I have come to you? And now I must return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I have gone forth, indeed the prince of Greece will come.” (Italics mine)
The prince of Persia is a spiritual principality. He is so powerful that the angel sent to Daniel needed help from the arch angel Michael to be able to get to Daniel (verse 13), and he was going to have to fight going back as well. The physical manifestation of the prince of Persia outworked itself through the Persian empire, but the power behind this empire was spiritual. Likewise the angel talking to Daniel said that once he had gone forth then the prince of Greece would come (another spiritual principality).
Ends of the Earth Part 2
In my last article we looked at the Biblical phrase “the ends of the earth.” We saw this encompasses all the island nations from Japan through to New Zealand, in fact all the countries on the immediate western side of the international dateline. We also saw that New Zealand is the “End of the Earth” or the “Uttermost part of the Earth”. But the Bible doesn’t just mention where these nations are, it commands them to do certain things. Let’s take a look (they’re mostly self explanatory):
“Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.”
